If there's anybody who doesn't like to lose his shirt, it's a Director of Finance. We swapped his oxfords for polos anyway...
Terry loves his blue buttondowns. Pinpoints in particular. As our Director of Finance, it's a perfectly appropriate choice. His idea of Casual Friday? An Oxford and Chinos, maybe sleeves rolled. Get the picture?
As Business Outfitters, we figured it was our duty to introduce Terry to Polos, opening his workweek to a world of comfort. Thousands of our business customers tell us our polos are perfect for busy agendas. Why not Terry's?
Our stylist gave him five polo outfits ranging from dressy (easy transition) to downright casual (a little challenge). We asked Terry to journal his experience. Did we make a convert out of him? You be the judge:
Monday: Dark Cobalt Blue Pima, True Navy Blazer, Khaki Twills. I had to lay my polo in clear view so I wouldn't reach for the buttondown out of habit. My daughter asked me where I was going and why I was taking the day off from work.
(Okay, I admit, I did put a blue buttondown and pair khakis in my car on Monday and kept them there all week - just in case. Yes, it was my security blanket.)
Within 30 minutes of arriving at work, I had at least ten comments about my casual attire. Most echoed my boss: "What's going on? Terry in a Polo?" But I have to admit, I liked the combination. And I was actually surprised at how easy it was to wear a blazer over a polo.
Tuesday: True Navy Pima, Khaki Twills. People were making bets that I wouldn't make it through the week. But this was easy. Navy is in my color comfort zone. Actually received an invite to hit the links after work (probably thought I was already headed there).
Wednesday: Classic Red Mesh, True Navy Chinos. This was a real stretch. My daughter told me she didn't like the color combination. I think she was just surprised to see me out of blue. I almost reached for my emergency back-up. But it was okay. I think commuting between buildings on the bicycles made me easier to spot. Points for safety?
Thursday: Pale Emerald Mesh, jeans. An edgy look for me. I was surprised to hear several comments that I looked good in that color. Our offices tend to be very relaxed, so I really fit in. Might be willing to try that combination again, now that it's warming up.
Friday: Active Colorblock Piqué, jeans. Jeans again? Luckily I had a second pair (after a quick search). All week I was debating how to handle Friday's attire. Do I tuck in or stay untucked? Well, when my daughter saw me untucked, she asked, "Are you going bowling today, Dad?" That's it. I tucked. I like the new Active Polo. Nice fabric. It kept me cool when I was running late to see my daughter's 3rd grade music program.
Yes, I survived the week. And yes, I have to admit: there is certainly a place for polos in business.
He's sold, right? But what did he wear the very next Monday? You guessed it: Lands' End Pinpoint and Twills. Baby steps.
